Our new Research Culture Action Plan, approved by our University Executive Board this summer, consolidates the work we have done so far to create the structures and incentives to develop an inclusive, supportive research culture and provides a plan to initiate a step-change in our research environment over the next 3-5 years.
We are committed to fostering a collegiate, open and collaborative ecosystem for all those participating in the research endeavour. And that ecosystem includes not just researchers, but also technicians, professional research enabling staff and others.
Since 2021, we have received substantial annual funding from Research England to invest in developing our research culture. This has enabled us to explore new and innovative approaches to open research, ED&I, and career development across faculties and professional services. There have been a range of surveys and consultations with researchers at all career stages to understand the strengths in our environment, identify areas to improve on and envision the future of our research culture together. The action plan is based on these activities.
Comprising three overarching priorities ((i) enabling professional fulfilment; (ii) enabling rigorous, open and responsible research; and (iii) creating opportunities for collaboration, creativity and innovation), the Research Culture Action Plan is a live document that is regularly reviewed by the Research Culture Steering Board, that reports to the Senate Research and Innovation Committee. The Research Culture Steering Board for was set up in 2021 and provides leadership and coordination to develop our research culture.
